Toyota to build RAV4 electric vehicle at its West Plant in Woodstock ; Minister of State for Science and Technology joined Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada on 5 August in announcing the production of the RAV4 electric vehicle at its West Plant in Woodstock, alongside the petrol-fuelled RAV4.

The production of the RAV4 electric vehicle is a component of Toyota's 'Project Green Light', which was announced on 5 July. The Government of Canada is providing Toyota with a repayable contribution of up to CA$70.84m (US$72.03m) for the overall project. Toyota's total investment in the project could reach up to CA$506m. The Province of Ontario is also providing assistance of up to CA$70.84m.

"The RAV4 EV will be the first highway-capable electric vehicle to be produced in Canada and the first electric vehicle to be produced by Toyota outside of Japan," noted Goodyear.

Federal funding for the project was made through Canada's Automotive Innovation Fund (AIF), which provides support for strategic, large-scale research and development projects in the automotive sector.

The RAV4 EV’s powertrain, inclusive of battery, electric motor and other components is to be supplied by Tesla, in which Toyota Motor has become an investor, and has issued a powertrain supply contract worth some US$100m. US pricing and distribution plans for the electric RAV4 EV have yet to be confirmed.

The car also features the new Toyota Touch and Go multimedia system, including touchscreen controls, which is fitted as standard to all but the entry level new Yaris model in the UK to appeal to the younger buyers. The Yaris comes in four trims of T2, TR, SR and T Spirit.

You have three choices for the engine. First there is the three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol with 68bhp at 6,000rpm and maximum torque of 93Nm at 3,600rpm. It does 58.9mpg. Then there’s the 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i engine with 98bhp at 6,000rpm and, at the peak of a gentle torque curve, 125Nm, rated at 56.5mpg. And finally the 1.4-litre D-4D engine fitted as standard with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and with output of 89bhp at 3,800rpm and maximum torque of 205Nm between 1,800 and 2,800rpm, and fuel consumption of 72.4 mpg.

UK range and prices

New Yaris will be offered in the UK in four grades – T2, TR, SR and T Spirit – which deliver an emphatic combination of high specification, quality and great value for money. Cars are available to order now, with first deliveries to customers from mid-September.

The heart of the range is the TR. Expected to command two thirds of new Yaris sales, it is available with all engine and transmission combinations, in three and five-door bodystyles. Key features of the TR include15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Toyota Touch with touchscreen audio controls, Bluetooth and rear parking camera

The SR, available exclusively with the 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine, has a sportier profile with a range of interior and exterior styling elements. Equipment highlights include 16-inch alloy wheels, rear roof spoiler, front fog lamps, part-leather upholstery, rear privacy glass and lowered suspension.

T Spirit focuses on premium features and is available in five-door format with the 1.33- litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine. Principal equipment of the T Spirit grade includes a panoramic glass roof, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror and smart entry and start.

On-the-road prices for new Yaris start at £11,170. Insurance groups will be announced in August.

Toyota to Test Condominium Car-Sharing in Japan

Toyota to Test Condominium Car-Sharing in Japan : Toyota Motor Corp. will offer a car-sharing program to residents of three condominiums – two in Tokyo, and one in Nagoya, Japan – in Spring 2012, using its Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), as well as the iQ-based electric vehicle (EV) now under development.

With a total test fleet of six cars, Toyota will allocate two vehicles to each of the three condos. Residents will be able to book a reservation for a Toyota next-generation vehicle via mobile phone or personal computer. The Prius Plug-in Hybrids and “iQ”-based electric vehicle units will be serviced and managed by nearby Toyota vehicle rental and lease companies. Fees have yet to be decided.

Toyota, in collaboration with the condominium developers and IHI Transport Machinery Co. Ltd., a Tokyo-based parking facility purveyor, will design parking facilities and charging equipment. The three condominium developers are Nomura Real Estate Development Co. Ltd, Daikyo Incorporated, and Toyota Housing Corporation.

A report by Green Car Congress finds that, during the past five years, car- sharing has become more popular in Japan among people in urban areas who do not own cars, and it is also gaining public attention as a countermeasure against global warming and oil dependency. Among the companies that have offered car-sharing are Mazda Car Rental Corp. and Orix Auto Corp.

“In response to these trends, Toyota, aiming to connect people with a new way of using future vehicles, decided to carry out this car-sharing program using next-generation plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles,” said a Toyota statement. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid can be charged from any household electricity source and has an electric-only driving range of 14.5 miles on a full charge. Once the external charge is depleted, the vehicle operates as a conventional gasoline-electric hybrid, alleviating worry about remaining battery power and charging infrastructure availability. Toyota Recalls Older Prius Cars To Fix Steering : Toyota Motor Corp. says it will recall certain first-generation Prius hybrid cars to fix a potential problem with their electric power steering systems.

The car maker says the recall includes about 52,000 vehicles from the 2001 through 2003 model years that were sold in the U.S. Worldwide the company is recalling 106,000 Prius vehicles.

The Prius’ problem stems from the nuts that fasten a part called the pinion shaft in the steering gear-box assembly. If the driver turns the steering wheel vigorously and repeatedly to the full-lock position – or the point where it cannot be moved further – the nuts can loosen over time. Drivers who continue to operate their vehicles in this manner could eventually notice that it is taking more effort to turn the steering wheel to the left.

Under the recall, Toyota dealers will install upgraded nuts free of charge. The company says the repair will take about four hours depending on how busy the dealer’s service department is, and that it will notify owners about the recall beginning next month.

In a separate recall the company said it would recall of 34 Venza all-wheel-drive cars and 16 Sienna all-wheel-drive minivans to replace front right-hand drive-shafts that could break because of insufficient heat treatment during manufacture. These vehicles are 2011 models that were recently produced.

However, the tradeoff for those larger dimensions is 200 extra pounds, and so fuel economy falls from 50 mpg with the Prius to a still-excellent 42 with the Prius V. On the road, the V looks like a tall wagon, and in most respects its performance lives up to the perception. Comfortable second-row seats slide forward and back. Wide rear-door openings and second-row 60/40 fold-flat capability show that the V can serve drivers and families for whom the standard Prius is too small.

Toyota will resume normal production from May 20 2011 : Toyota will resume normal production at its Bangalore plants from Friday. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), the company’s local subsidiary, had scaled down operations at the units following the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan in March, squeezing supply lines of crucial components. In fact, the company had announced suspension of production on Mondays and Fridays between April 25 and June 4.

“TKM’s parts sourcing is getting back on track. Production will return back to normal levels starting May 20. Plans are afoot to recover loss of production and reduce the waiting period. The plant will function on all weekdays and some of the non-working Saturdays,” the company said in a statement.
